SAWYER
A person who worked in a timber mill or pit, sawing timber into boards. In earlier days logs of trees were sawn lengthwise with two man rip cut
saws. The log was suspended over a pit, one man sawing from above and another
on the other end of the saw, standing in the pit. Needless to say the guy below
had the worst of the deal.------------------------------------------------
Yarrow
The village of Yarrow is situated on Yarrow Water, 9 miles west of Selkirk, in the old
county of Selkirkshire. Its original church was built c.1640 by the Covenanters and
restored after a fire in 1922. Sir Walter Scott attended church here while he lived at
Ashiestiel (1804-12). A sundial contains the instruction 'Watch and Pray / Tyme is
Short'. An early Christian stone lies about 1 km south-west of the village with a faint
Latin inscription which possibly names members of a British Christian dynasty in the
5th or 6th century AD.Well known for its battles, feuds and beauty, the Yarrow Valley spurred the creation
of numerous ballads, such as 'The Dowie Dens of Yarrow', and figured highly in Sir
Walter Scott's collection of Minstrelsy. Other authors associated with the area include
William Dunbar, James Hogg, Christopher North and Wordsworth.

The following quotation comes from the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland, edited by John Marius Wilson and published in
1868. This reference was found in volume II, page 868:"The ancient parish of Duchoire, a name which has been corrupted into Dewchar, forms the north-eastern part of
the united parish of Yarrow. Its church and the stronghold of its feudal proprietor stood on a burn which comes
down to the Yarow immediately east of the present parish church. The ancient parish of St Mary's forms the
western district of the united parish of Yarrow. Its church stood on the margin of St Mary's lake, and gave name
to that lake. The church, as its designation implies, was dedicated to the Virgin Mary; it was described colloquially
as 'St Mary's kirk of the Lowes' or lochs, and in charters as 'the Church of the Virgin Mary in Ettrick Forest'; and
it seems to have become a vicarage under the monks of Dryburgh."
Helen TURNBULL "Nellie" was born about 1788 in Yarrow, Selkirk, Scotland. She died unknown date in Scotland. Nellie married Thomas HOGG on 14 May 1809 in Yarrow, Selkirk, Scotland.
TURNBULL
Early forms of the name Turnbull in Scotland include Turnebule and Tornebole which were both recorded in the fourteenth century. The name is of northern origin and was found on both sides of the Anglo-Scottish frontier in the age of the sixteenth century Border reivers. Enemies of the Turnbulls included the Armstrong clan of the Debatable Land on the border between
Cumbria and Scotland. Turnbull is a nickname and literally means 'turns bull'. referring to a person's abilty to become strong orbrave when the need arose. In the sixteenth century a Yorkshire horse which displayed these characteristics was known as 'Turnbull'. Another theory for the name is that it is a reference to a drover, which was a common occupation in the Scottish
borders. The French word 'Tourneboef' is a word for a drover and may be realted to Turnbull. Some believe that the Fife names Trumble and Trimble, also of Scottish origin are corruptions of Turnbull but a Robert de Tremblee is recorded in the thirteenth century and it may be that these forms derive from this particular name. In Yorkshire a name Trumbald or Thrumball existed as early as 1313 and another form Trumbald occurs in Suffolk in 1327.These names derive from the Anglo-Saxon Trumbeald meaning strong-bold, but again sepculation that these names became Turnbull has not been proven. Today the name Turnbull is commonest in Northumberland Tyneside, Durham and the Scottish borders.
